Leonardo DiCaprio Is Building An Eco-Resort in Belize

Leonardo DiCaprio has unveiled plans to build a luxury, eco-friendly resort on his private island in Belize. The 104 acres (42 hectare) isle known as Belize’s Blackadore Caye, will be the first living building resort in the world, and will be completely powered by renewable energy and designed to increase the biological health of species on the island and in the waters around it.

“The main focus is to do something that will change the world,” DiCaprio told the The New York Times. “I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren’t for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement.”

Constructed in partnership with Paul Scialla, the project wiil feature a total of 116 accommodations, including 68 resort villas and 48 private homes, and other amenities that will serve some of the world’s most influential global citizens. The “Blackadore Caye, A Restorative Island“ is set to open in 2018.

*update: The eco-resort was supposed to open in 2018, but the team announced that the opening was delayed until 2020.
