A rare Stradivarius viola, made by the famed Italian artisan Antonio Stradivari in 1719 will be auctioned by Sotheby’s this spring. The ‘MacDonald’ is one of just ten violas made by Antonio Stradivari that are still in existence, and the first to be offered under the hammer for the past 5 decades. This rare piece was owned by Peter Schidlof, co-founder of the Amadeus Quartet who acquired it in 1964 and died in 1987. The starting price of this viola will be $45 million, and the highest bidder will be announced on June 25.
