Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed his intentions to construct a luxury, eco-friendly resort on his private island in Belize. Spanning 104 acres (42 hectares), the island, known as Belize’s Blackadore Caye, will mark a groundbreaking milestone as the world’s inaugural living building resort. It will operate solely on renewable energy, aiming to enhance the biological diversity of species both on the island and in the surrounding waters.
“The main focus is to do something that will change the world,” DiCaprio told the The New York Times. “I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren’t for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement.”
*update: The eco-resort was supposed to open in 2018, but the team announced that the opening was delayed until 2020.
