Jeff Koons’s shiny, mirrored sculpture of the cartoon “Popeye” sold for a whopping $28,165,000USD at Sotheby’s New York last night. Koons created the statue from 2009 to 2011, this work is number three from an edition of three plus one artist’s proof.

From his first representations by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol in the 1960s, to the present three-dimensional crescendo by Jeff Koons a half century later, this ultimate American hero and self-made man has remained a true icon of both art history and popular culture.” – commented Alex Rotter, Co-Head of Sotheby’s Worldwide Contemporary Art Department.
The amazing sculpture was bought by the hotelier Steve Wynn for display in one of his Las Vegas properties.
