Jeff Koons’s shiny mirrored sculpture of the cartoon character Popeye sold for $28,165,000 at Sotheby’s New York last night. Koons created the work between 2009 and 2011; this is number three from an edition of three, plus one artist’s proof.

From his first representations by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol in the 1960s, to the present three-dimensional crescendo by Jeff Koons a half century later, this ultimate American hero and self-made man has remained a true icon of both art history and popular culture.” – commented Alex Rotter, Co-Head of Sotheby’s Worldwide Contemporary Art Department.
The amazing sculpture was bought by the hotelier Steve Wynn for display in one of his Las Vegas properties.
