The only authenticated photograph of Billy the Kid sold for $2.3 million at an auction in Denver, Colorado, underscoring the lasting fascination with one of the American West’s most iconic outlaws. Believed to have been taken between 1879 and 1880, the rare tintype originally cost just $0.25. The image shows William Henry McCarty, better known as Billy the Kid, posing in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
“130 years ago, legendary outlaw Billy the Kid had his “picture made” in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, posing for what is now considered the most recognizable photo of the American West. A single, original tintype is the only authenticated photo of the Kid in existence today.”
The photograph was acquired by billionaire William Koch, founder of Oxbow Carbon, further cementing its status as one of the most valuable outlaw images ever sold.
