The 1967 Toyota 2000GT is widely regarded as a pinnacle of automotive design, exuding an enduring aura of sophistication. Its impeccable craftsmanship and timeless beauty were recently reaffirmed at an RM Auctions event, where it fetched an eye-watering price of $1,155,000. This auction price not only confirms its aesthetic appeal but also solidifies its status as a prized collector’s item.
“I believe it to be the highest price ever achieved for both a Toyota production car and any Asian car,” wrote David Kinney, publisher of Hagerty’s price guide, in an email to The New York Times. “I have searched for anything higher and have been unable to find it.”
The 1967 Toyota 2000GT, co-developed with Yamaha, is a testament to Japanese engineering prowess. Its 2.0L DOHC inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 150 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, enables it to exceed 135 mph. Often referred to as “the best sports car you’ve never driven,” only 351 examples of this sleek sports car were produced between 1967 and 1970.
