This 1962 painting by Andy Warhol called “One Dollar Bill” (Silver Certificate) sold for an astonishing £20,869,000 ($32,770,591), during an auction at Sotheby’s in London.
“Bidders from across the globe were drawn to Warhol works that ripped up the rule book for 20th-century art; rediscovered Francis Bacon gems; and some of the greatest works by British artists of the last 70 years.” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s head of contemporary art. The 132.4 by 182cm.(52 1/8 by 71 5/8 in) hand-painted work is the only one the artist painted by hand shortly before he discovered the screen-printing technique.
