This 1962 painting by Andy Warhol, titled “One Dollar Bill (Silver Certificate),” sold for an astonishing £20,869,000 ($32,770,591) at a Sotheby’s auction in London.
“Bidders from across the globe were drawn to Warhol works that ripped up the rule book for 20th‑century art; rediscovered Francis Bacon gems; and some of the greatest works by British artists of the last 70 years,” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s head of contemporary art.
The 132.4 × 182 cm (52 1/8 × 71 5/8 in) hand‑painted work is the only one the artist painted by hand shortly before he adopted the screen‑printing technique.
