Three of the Best Cities in the UK for a Winter Break

As the cold weather starts to set in, there’s nothing more romantic than a weekend getaway. And with a range of stunning destinations right here on our doorstep, there’s a city just waiting for you to discover it. What’s more, a weekend break in the UK doesn’t have to mean heading to London, as there’s a plethora of places that combine tranquillity with festive hustle and bustle.

Here are our three favourite destinations for a winter city break:

  1. Bath Winter Break

Not only does Bath boast stunning Georgian crescents and terraces, but it also celebrates Christmas in style. With a Christmas market, which is right in the centre of Bath itself, it’s the perfect place to get into the festive spirit, whether you head out on the outdoor ice rink or you relax and unwind in one of its many cosy restaurants.

While you’re there, you might want to get to know its history, too, by visiting the Roman Baths or learning about Jane Austen, one of Bath’s most famous previous residents. Then, finish off with a spot of Christmas shopping in its vast array of shops and boutiques.

  1. Edinburgh

Although it’s bound to be colder up north, Edinburgh has to be one of the most romantic cities – especially in winter. With its rolling hills, rugged cliff tops and imposing castle, you cannot fail but to be impressed by this destination. Make the most of the cold weather by dipping in and out of its friendly pubs as you explore everything the city has to offer. Step back in time at Edinburgh Castle, enjoy a local night out in Grassmarket or soak up the terrifying atmosphere on a haunted ghost tour that takes you into the bowels of the city.

  1. Lincoln

Last, but by no means least, is Lincoln – a historic city that hosts one of the most visited Christmas markets in the UK. At the centre of this breathtaking city is the Cathedral, which is a sight to behold in itself – and throughout December it’s transformed into a winter wonderland, with various events and concerts being held there.

Lincoln’s also the perfect place to do a spot of shopping, but you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared if you’re going to walk up Steep Hill! This street, which was once named the best in the UK, has a rather challenging gradient – but, thankfully, there are plenty of shops to stop off at on your way up.

So, there you have it, our top pick of winter city destinations in the UK, whether you want to immerse yourself in local history or soak up the fabulous festivities.
