3 Awesome Field Trip Destinations for STEM Students

While universities in many states are still struggling to fill their STEM degree slots, educators are becoming more aware of the need to inspire students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In fact, courses like the STEM certificate offered by Fresno Pacific University are designed to teach K-14 educators how to engage their students in these areas, and integrate concepts from each of the STEM subjects, rather than teaching them separately.

One of the best ways you can inspire youngsters is through taking them on field trips to provide them with real-world, practical knowledge. Here, we have taken a look at some of the best field trip ideas for STEM students that you may want to discuss and get approved by your faculty.

Huntsville, Alabama

Awesome Field Trip
Huntsville, Alabama, is home to a number of great field trip destinations including the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, the Cummings Research Park, and the US Space and Rocket Center. Whether you want to teach your students more about the practical applications of engineering or want to show them more about how science and technology impact business, you have plenty of options available to you. One other place that we definitely should mention here is Girls Incorporated of Huntsville. Girls often shy away from STEM subjects, but this location has both one-day sessions and longer internships that can help prepare them for a career in the STEM field.

Seattle, Washington

Like Huntsville, Seattle also has a number of attractions that have been specifically designed for girls considering a career in the STEM field. The Burke Museum, in particular, offers free programs for middle and high school girls with an interest in math and technology. There are lots of exhibits and attractions for both sexes in the city, though. Two of the most notable include the Future of Flight Aviation Boeing Tour, which teaches students about how aircraft are made (and enables them to take part in a flight simulation!), and the Digital Media Academy, which provides week-long courses to young students with an interest in tech.

Chicago, Illinois

Providing an engaging science experience for students of all ages, the Museum of Science and Industry is a top choice for field trips to the city of Chicago. However, again, there are plenty of other options too. The Adler Planetarium is one good option that can immerse your students in the wonders of the universe and astronomy. The Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium are two other good choices, both guaranteed to invoke interest from your students as they learn more about natural history. Finally, the city’s Loyola University is also worth considering as it has joined up with ID Tech to provide field trips to STEM students that include an overnight stay. Students will be able to immerse themselves in the college lifestyle while taking part in some really fun lessons.

Although STEM may not be inspiring students in the way that many would like, hopefully, we have shown you that there are a lot of fun activities in the United States that can help spark an interest.
