Basquiat’s ‘Warrior’ Painting Goes Under the Hammer

Jean-Michel Basquiat Warrior

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1982 masterpiece, “Warrior,” takes center stage at Christie’s Hong Kong auction on March 23 as a single-lot sale titled “We Are All Warriors.” This iconic work, a pinnacle of Basquiat‘s creative output, carries an estimated value of $31-41 million USD (HKD 240-320 million) and could become the most expensive Western artwork ever sold in Asia. Created with acrylic, oil stick, and spray paint on wood panel, the painting depicts a formidable warrior wielding Basquiat’s distinctive skull-like head. With its potential as a sound investment, “Warrior” is offered by a private American collector who acquired the piece at Sotheby’s London in June 2012 for US$8.7 million. The auction is scheduled to commence at 10:00 AM HKT.

*UPDATE: Jean-Michel Basquiat’s iconic “Warrior” conquered Christie’s Hong Kong auction, selling for HKD 323.6 million (approx. $41.8 million USD).
