Ultra-Rare 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 Hits the Market

An extraordinary 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6, one of only 65 produced, is now up for sale through RM Sotheby’s. Commissioned by Italian amateur racer and hillclimb specialist Ermanno Spazzapan, a passionate motorsport enthusiast who competed under the pseudonym “Mann,” chassis 906-115 quickly proved its competitive potential. Completed at Zuffenhausen on March 9, 1966, the car was ordered by Spazzapan, a devoted Porsche competitor who had previously raced a 356B 2000GS and a 356 Carrera Abarth GTL in Italian national events during 1964 and 1965.

Engineered as a lightweight successor to the 904, the Porsche 906 Carrera 6 featured a multi-tubular frame and unstressed fiberglass bodywork to minimize weight. The vehicle was powered by a 2.0-liter Type 901/20 six-cylinder engine which included a sand-cast magnesium Elektron crankcase, a forged steel crankshaft together with titanium connecting rods and forged alloy pistons and employed dry-sump lubrication. A cutting-edge powertrain generating 210 horsepower enabled the 906 to challenge larger-displacement competitors effectively.

The Porsche 906 achieved notable racing success through its class win at the 1968 Imola 500 Kilometers and third-place class finish at the 1967 Circuito del Mugello. European racing events brought the Porsche 906 to Vallelunga, Mugello, and Innsbruck circuits before it was acquired by private collectors.

After a successful racing career, it was sold to Porsche enthusiast Bernd Becker, who kept it from 1977 to 2001. This well-preserved car still has its original gearbox and GRP body panels. It recently got a thorough servicing by Road Scholars in Durham, NC, and comes with its original Kardex, an expired FIA Historic Technical Passport, and a detailed report from Porsche expert Jürgen Barth. The 906 is up for grabs through RM Sotheby’s private sales. Who’s ready to make it theirs?
