It’s official: Disney has confirmed that its long-awaited Star Wars theme park will open in 2019, timed right alongside the release of Star Wars: Episode IX. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger made the announcement during the Walt Disney Company’s Q1 FY17 earnings call.
Construction is already underway at both Disneyland in Anaheim and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. The 14-acre Star Wars land promises to be a full immersive experience, with guests transported to a never-before-seen planet populated by characters from the franchise. Basically, the closest any of us will get to actually living inside the movies.
Two coasts, one galaxy. Disney clearly wants every Star Wars fan within driving distance of a park to empty their wallets, and honestly, it will probably work. Disney is not the only name betting on immersive parks. In 2014, Cirque du Soleil and resort developer Grupo Vidanta announced a themed entertainment park for Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, planned with three themed resort hotels and a full Cirque show.
