Inside Roman Abramovich’s $700M Superyacht Eclipse: A Palace of Luxury and Tax Controversy

Since March 2022, a highly controversial guest has been anchored along Turkey’s South Aegean coast—the 164-meter superyacht Eclipse, owned by a Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. Facing extensive Western sanctions due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Abramovich sought a safe haven for his yacht to avoid government seizure. Recently, the Russian oligarch has faced allegations of tax evasion linked to his fleet of superyachts, reportedly facilitated by offshore schemes, as disclosed by Boat International.

Delivered in 2010 at a cost of €350 million, the 162.5-meter motor yacht Eclipse, constructed in Germany by Blohm & Voss, serves as its flagship. Formerly the world’s largest private yacht, it continues to command attention while incurring significant maintenance expenses.

The yacht features a sprawling 56-meter owner’s deck and interiors adorned with hundreds of bespoke details. A 16-meter swimming pool with an adjustable floor that converts to a dance floor highlights the outdoor spaces. Three helicopters can be accommodated: two on dedicated helipads and a third in a hangar beneath the foredeck.

Four MTU diesel engines drive the yacht to a maximum speed of 21 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots, covering 6,000 nautical miles at the cruising speed. Built for ultra-rich owners, it accommodates 36 guests in 18 staterooms and runs with a crew of 70. Special technical highlights include a phenomenal gross tonnage of 13,564 and a beam of 22,4 meters which ratify its immense scale and capability.

Designed inside and out by Terence Disdale, she reflects the expertise of a renowned designer with a portfolio of 41 yacht exteriors and 79 interiors for vessels over 24 meters.

The vessel’s curated art collection, bespoke finishes, and precision climate-control systems maintain its immaculate condition—even as operational costs soar. Reports indicate the yacht burns approximately one ton of diesel daily just to run its air conditioning and other essential systems.

In 2011, Eclipse was honored as Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards and remains one of the most talked-about superyachts in modern maritime history.
