A standout yellow‑gold Rolex ref. 6062—automatic triple‑calendar with moonphase, black dial and diamond indices—sold for for a staggering $6.2 million at Monaco Legend Group’s Exclusive Timepieces auction. The sale sets a new record for the reference and solidifies its place as the third-highest Rolex sale in history.
While the all-time record still belongs to Paul Newman’s personal “Paul Newman” Daytona, which sold for $17.75 million, this weekend’s result is monumental. It not only sets a new benchmark for the 6062 but also surpasses the famed “Bao Dai” Rolex —a specially commissioned timepiece made for Vietnam’s last emperor.

The Rarity of the Black Diamond Dial 6062
Introduced at Basel in 1950 and limited to around 350 watches, the Rolex 6062 is pure horological flex: a 36mm Oyster that combines day, date and moonphase without sacrificing the brand’s waterproof toughness. Scarcity is amplified by dial differences. With dials from Créations Stern SA, the 6062’s “stelline” star dial is celebrated, but the black dial with diamond markers is the rarest and most sought after, with only three known pieces.

A Flawless Provenance
Bearing case number 942,536, the piece is one of two black‑dial 6062s that place diamonds at 1,3,5,7,9 and 11—an extra gem and neater symmetry versus the Bao Dai (12,2,4,8,10)—and is cased in yellow gold with a yellow‑gold Tile bracelet. Housed in yellow gold, it’s fitted with a matching yellow‑gold Tile bracelet — as if its rarity and provenance weren’t already enough.

Prior sales include Sotheby’s London (28 Feb 1991, lot 141) and Antiquorum’s Mondani Collection sale (14 May 2006, lot 249 — CHF 469,700). The watch is documented on the cover and at page 227 of Osvaldo Patrizzi’s Collecting Rolex Wristwatches.
