Put Maximilian Büsser and Serge Kriknoff from MB&F in a room with Urwerk founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, and this is what comes out. The C3H5N3O9 Experiment ZR012 is a collaboration between two of the most unconventional watchmakers working today, and the result looks nothing like a traditional timepiece.
The watch takes its design cues from the Wankel engine. Instead of pistons moving up and down, it uses orbital Reuleaux polygon rotors, the same triangular rotors that spin inside certain car engines. Seeing that motion translated onto a wrist is the whole appeal here.
Production is limited to just 12 pieces for 2012. The price is 110,000 Swiss francs, roughly $116,000, before shipping and taxes.
