Louis Vuitton keeps testing how far a leather handbag can go, and the Louis Vuitton City Steamer Alligator is the latest proof. Priced at $55,500, this alligator version of the City Steamer is being positioned as the most expensive leather bag the maison has ever offered.
On paper, it’s still a City Steamer. In person, the Louis Vuitton City Steamer Alligator feels like a different object entirely. The rigid, almost architectural shape is softened by the natural grain of the alligator skin, which catches light in a way smooth calfskin never could. Gold‑tone hardware adds warmth, the small LV metallic nametag keeps branding discreet, and the faceted, engraved padlock pushes the finish into something closer to jewelry than accessories. There’s also a removable 65 cm leather strap, so you can carry it by the top handles for a formal look or wear it on the shoulder when you want a bit more ease.
At 12.2 x 10.2 x 5.5 inches, the City Steamer Alligator is large enough to be functional but still reads as a collector’s piece first. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t sit in a standard online cart. The bag is currently available, but you’ll have to call LV to purchase one.
