Surprise! DeLorean Motor Company has officially revealed the first images of their upcoming electric vehicle, the Alpha5. The design pays slight homage to the original vehicle of the Back to the Future series, the new car has been designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s ItalDesign studio, which also designed the original DMC.
“The Alpha5 is a representation of the past 40 years of DeLorean,” Troy Beetz, Chief Marketing Officer of DeLorean Motor Company, said in a statement. “There was this enormous responsibility to make sure we honored the history of the DeLorean brand, but an even greater responsibility in curating its future…I think we did both with the Alpha5.”
When it comes to performance, the Alpha5 packs a 100kWh battery, offering an estimated 300 miles of range (483 kilometers); It will get from 0–60mph in around 3.4sec (or 88mph in 4.35 seconds, if you’re curious), and a top speed limited to 150 MPH.
The company plans to officially reveal the car to the public at the Pebble Beach Concours d ‘Elegance in August. The car will be sold in a limited run of 88 (a nod to the 88mph speed needed to send the movie car back to the future), pricing hasn’t been revealed but we can expect the Alpha5 Launch Edition to go on sale soon after its public debut.
