Officine Panerai has presented “Lo Scienziato” at SIHH 2016, a skeletonised tourbillon collection dedicated to the Tuscan genius Galileo Galilei. It’s a fitting namesake for a watch this technical.
The case is a 47mm brushed titanium number protected by a sapphire crystal formed of corundum, continuing Panerai’s tradition of working with the lightweight metal. If you follow the brand, you’ll remember models like the Luminor Submersible 1950 Anti-Magnetic Titanium.
Inside beats the P.2005/T calibre, the first Panerai tourbillon movement built in titanium. It wasn’t the brand’s first tourbillon, though: the red gold Radiomir 1940 Tourbillon GMT Oro Rosso had already paired one with a second time zone. The skeletonised bridges and plates are executed entirely in-house, and the watch runs at 28,800 A/h (4 Hz) with an impressive 144-hour power reserve.
