Monaco has a thing for red, and Hublot leaned into it hard for Only Watch 2013. The Swiss brand brought a world first to the charity auction: the Red’n’Black Skeleton, a tourbillon timepiece carved entirely from bright red ceramic. One piece exists and it went under the hammer on 28 September 2013 in Monaco, with every franc going to the Monegasque Association against Muscular Dystrophy. The cause gives even a jaded watch collector a reason to pay attention.
This isn’t new territory for Hublot. The brand has a habit of building one-offs for moments that matter. A few years back it made the Greengo Bang to mark the 40th anniversary of the GreenGo nightclub in Gstaad. A red ceramic skeleton tourbillon for charity sits in the same spirit, just with a louder color.
Bright red ceramic is a genuinely difficult material to work with, which makes the openworked dial and tourbillon cage on this piece all the more impressive in the metal. More details on the sale are up at www.onlywatch.com.
